As the UN Security Council gets ready to take another vote on a resolution condemning the violence in Syria later today, one (again) has to ask whether actors such as the EU are still capable to apply pressure on Russia or China. Both have blocked resolutions on Syria in the past. And the EU is very much relying on Russia for gas (hard winter everywhere across Europe atm) and on China for investments in the squeezed eurozone. The China-trip of German chancellor Merkel has already shown that Western countries have lost much of the leverage they once had: the Chinese don’t accept the West telling them off anymore.
